Plaid Friday was created by Kerri Johnson in Oakland, California, in 2009. Johnson was looking for an alternative to the frenzied shopping of Black Friday and wanted to promote the benefits of shopping locally. She chose the name "Plaid Friday" because plaid is a traditional holiday fabric that includes different colors woven together, like the different businesses within a community. The purpose of Plaid Friday is to promote small, independent businesses and to encourage shoppers to think about the impact of their spending choices.
